Will our elections get stolen?

So, we know that Boris has decided that local elections will go ahead on 6th of May, and these are big elections. There are all outs for the borough with every seat (54) up for grabs and Hampshire County elections and Police Commissioner elections too.

Set against a background of appalling Tory performance in the pandemic and Tory Councils proposing even more cuts and increased charges in their February budgets you might wonder why Boris would want these elections to go ahead. Well, most postal voters are Tory voters and if people are worried about voting at a polling station and stay away – who does that favour?

When the government has also banned leaflet delivery and door to door campaigning and is only allowing very expensive paid for campaigning like mail shots and paid for door deliveries – who stands to gain? Parties with massive corporate donors and big full coffers.

We need to really fight the Tories in these local elections. The austerity that will surely follow this pandemic will hit people hard. Local councils need to make decisions about spending that puts people front and centre, not doing things like increasing bulky waste charges by up to 180%. One Basingstoke Tory proposal mooted was to make disabled people pay for parking – how low can these people go? Luckily, your Labour councillors made such a stink the Tories got cold feet and withdrew this plan. Make no mistake there are plenty more similar things we need to fight.

So, here’s the problem. The government won’t let us campaign like we would normally, and although we have the money for printing leaflets saved up, we need extra money to get them delivered. We need to raise an additional £5000 to help us make sure we can contact voters and let them know we are here, and why they should vote for us. We need a level playing field.

Every penny helps. Please help us by making a donation. The links on this page will mean the money donated comes to us, direct at Basingstoke. Any donation no matter how small will make a difference.
