A boundary review has reorganised many of the wards in which members live. As a result, there will be ‘All Out’ elections in Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council in May 2020. Every single Council seat becomes vacant. The number of councillors will reduce from 60 to 54 as the Council wards are reorganised.

Basingstoke Labour Party has been preparing for these changes for over a year. We have followed a Labour Party process for interviewing and assessing members who are existing Labour councillors and new applicants. There is a selections timetable.

Our ‘panel of approved local government candidates’ is ready to go forward to special member meetings in September and October 2019. At these meetings, members will shortlist and then select our Labour councillor candidates for the May 2020 elections.

Special Shortlisting and Selection Meetings

You should receive a letter or email agenda from Natasha Carr, Procedures Secretary (Contact form) to invite you to the shortlisting and selection meetings for your new ward. The meeting agenda outlines the seats to be selected, any positive action procedures (All Women Shortlists) and the balloting procedures. Simply reply to your email or fill in our short RSVP form to let us know if you can attend.

In the Shortlisting Meeting, members decide who they would like to shortlist from the panel of approved candidates and whether they want to reselect sitting councillors. If sitting councillors are re-selected, only the remaining shortlisted nominees will go forward to the Selection Meeting. If sitting councillors are not re-selected, they go through to the Selection Meeting with the rest of the shortlisted nominees.

In the separate Selection Meeting, shortlisted candidates can make a short speech and answer questions. Members then will vote to choose their candidates.

Am I eligible to attend?  If you joined the Labour Party on or before 10 December 2018, if you are fully paid up (i.e. not in arrears) and if you are registered to vote in one of the wards below, then you should be eligible to attend the special meetings. You can only attend the meeting for the ward in which you live.

The venue for all meetings is: Four Lanes Room, Viables Community Centre (Viables Craft Centre), The Harrow Way, Basingstoke RG22 4BJ. See it on a Google map. The venue is accessible and there is on site parking.

Selecting your local Labour councillor candidates is one of the most important responsibilities of members during the year. We really hope to see you at the meetings.
